University of Illinois System Senate Committee on University Student Life met Oct. 8.
Here is the minutes provided by the committee:
I. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Senate Committee on University Student Life (SL) was called to order at 11:00 am with Chair Alam presiding.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the September 10, 2020 meeting was approved as distributed by roll call vote.
Yes: Fogelman, Flanagin, Joshi, Kalita, Swanson, Usher, Valenzuela Ramirez
No: None
Abstain: Alam
III. PUBLIC COMMENT
No requests received.
IV. CHAIR’S REMARKS
Resolution for Kingfisher was approved by the Senate at the September meeting.
V. VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS UPDATES (Brown Young)
Brown Young shared the following:
•Waiting the final decision for the spring semester. This will dictate how the campus will function in the spring.
•Dealing with campus climate issues (harassment; sexual misconduct; financial aid; mental health). We have suffered a financial loss from spring to now. Student affairs will have to make major decisions and possibly recalibrate the services offered in student affairs. May not be able to deliver the normal services that the students are accustomed to.
•Trying to engage the first year students on a different level. It has not been the normal experience. Some of the first year students are struggling, feeling isolated and alone. Working hard in the residence halls to get them involved.
•Weekend programing at Memorial Stadium will be continuing.
•Student Affairs and faculty are engaged in conversations on student mental health. We may want to invite someone from the counseling center to attend a meeting.
•Few weeks ago system wide symposium on student mental health.
VI. ISG PRESIDENT UPDATES (Perezchica)
Perezchica shared the following:
•ICause Illini training was done on Monday.
•Governmental relations is hosting activities around voter registration
•Working on website now that we have a technology coordinator
•Filled outreach coordinator position. Working on establishing relationship with culture houses and Registered Student Organizations.
•ISG members have met with the counseling center and collaborating on a survey to send to students. Once approved by the counseling center, the survey will be sent out. The results will be shared with the counseling center, ISG and the committee.
VII. OLD BUSINESS
Topic of Discussion
•Bylaws
The committee discussed changes to the Bylaws. The revised document will be voted on at the next meeting.
