DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2: NRC to Hold Virtual Meeting to Discuss Performance of the Catawba, McGuire, and Oconee Nuclear Power Plants

Meetingvirtual

Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 issued the following announcement on Mar. 27.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the 2020 safety performance of the Catawba, McGuire, and Oconee nuclear power plants during a virtual meeting to be held on April 1.

The two-unit Catawba and three-unit Oconee plants are located in South Carolina, and the two unit McGuire plant is in North Carolina. Duke Energy operates the three plants.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m., Eastern time, with a presentation by the NRC staff responsible for plant inspections. Following the discussion with Duke Energy, the NRC, including the resident inspectors, will answer questions.

The public and media can access the meeting via Teams.

For those without access to Teams, the telephone conference number is (301) 576-2978, passcode 71391471# NRC resident inspectors and other inspection specialists from the Region II office in Atlanta performed inspections at the three sites and determined that the Catawba, McGuire, and Oconee plants operated safely during 2020.

All three plants are currently under the NRC’s normal level of oversight. The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or, red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
