Illinois State Senate Committee on Student Discipline Met April 12.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

Present: Carolyn Beck, David Forsyth, Pat Gill, Merinda Hensley, Kirk Sanders, Harshini Gorijala, Anushya Iyer, Samantha Nardella, and Madisyn Stauffer

Staff: January Boten, Eric Gorecki, Debra Imel, Abisola Smith, Mariah Young, and Robert Wilczynski

Absent: Meghan Burke, Darin Eastburn, Arne Fliflet, Yuan-Xiang Pan, Joshua Atkins, and Veronica Kozlowski Staff: Justin Brown, Rony Die

1. Call to Order

A regular meeting of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline was called to order at 3:19 p.m. with Chair Pat Gill presiding.

2. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the February 22, 2021 meeting were approved as distributed by roll call vote.

Yes: Beck, Forsyth, Gill, Hensley, Gorijala, Iyer, Nardella, and Stauffer

No: None

Abstain: None

None Voting: Sanders

3. Public Comment

A request to make public comment at the April 12, 2021 regular meeting was received by Chair Pat Gill on April 11, 2021 and approved.

Daniel Gealow, Undergraduate Student in Bioengineering, spoke on the harshness or perceived harshness of the implementation of disciplinary protocols for COVID-19 violations.

After public comment, Chair Gill thanked student Daniel Gealow for his comments.

4. Chair’s Remarks

Thanked everyone for being here during these difficult times.

6. New Business

a. Vote on Proposed New Members to the Subcommittees on Student Conduct.

Gill talked about the search process and involvement in the interviews and shared there was a great group of applicants. Forsyth made a motion to accept the proposed new members, it was seconded by Beck, and the motion was unanimously approved via roll call vote.

Yes: Beck, Forsyth, Gill, Hensley, Sanders, Gorijala, Iyer, Nardella, and Stauffer

No: None

Abstain: None

b. Summer availability, graduations

Discussion on membership, returning to the SCSD, and summer participation in appeal hearings.

c. Training on August 21, 2021

Boten discussed the required training for returning members and reminded everyone the training will be held this year on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Additionally, Gill asked about the possibility of changes to the Title IX procedures under the new administration. Comment was added that it is possible but would take time. Current procedures will continue into the fall 2021 semester.

This business meeting adjourned at 3:35 p.m.
