Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) was a part of the American Nuclear Society webinar this week in which she discussed the significance of nuclear power.
Rezin said on Twitter that she would talk about a state energy bill that would safeguard power plants.
“Prep call for the American Nuclear Webinar tomorrow. Subject will be US Nuclear Power Plants: Clean Energy Assets at Risk. I’ll be discussing the energy bill passed in IL that preserved our nuclear power plants,” she wrote.
The webinar was moderated by Executive Director and CEO of the American Nuclear Society, Craig Piercy, with Rezin among the three panelists who discussed the vitality of nuclear energy, according to the American Nuclear Society.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2408 in September, which permitted two of Exelon's Illinois nuclear power plants to remain operational.
“In the last decade, almost a dozen U.S. nuclear power plants have prematurely retired. As clean energy commitments expand globally and nationally, the value of existing nuclear power plants and the numerous closures seem diametrically opposed,” the American Nuclear Society posted on its website. “An expert panel will offer diverse perspectives on recent successes and what challenges the nuclear industry faces next in the ongoing fight to preserve the existing fleet of plants in the U.S.”
Rezin was joined on the panel by Ejeong Baik, PhD. candidate, Department of Energy Resources Engineering, Stanford University, and Donnie Colston, director, utility department, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Rezin wrote in a Facebook post at the time that the move would help the state keep thousands of jobs that were critical to the economy.
“This morning the governor signed Senate Bill 2408, which ensures that our state’s nuclear fleet stays online and preserves thousands of jobs that they provide to our local communities,” Rezin posted on Facebook of the state’s new clean energy bill. “It’s official.”
