University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Senate met Dec. 6.

I. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Senate was called to order at 3:10 pm with Senate Executive Committee (SEC) Vice-Chair John Dallesasse (ENGR) presiding and Professor Emeritus H. George Friedman, Jr. serving as Parliamentarian.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
12/06/21-01 Without objection, the minutes of the November 15, 2021 meeting were approved as distributed by unanimous consent.
III. APPROVAL OF FLOOR PRIVILEGES
12/06/21-02 The following individual requested floor privileges. Without objection, floor privileges were granted by unanimous consent.
RS.22.02, Resolution Regarding Data Collection and Instructor Notification in Cases of Students with Highly Infectious Diseases in Instructional Settings

IV. PUBLIC COMMENT

V. SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REMARKS
Vice-Chair Dallesasse gave remarks in SEC Chair Rob Kar’s absence. Dallesasse acknowledged how stressful this time of the year and semester can be. There are a number of mental health resources available and Dallesasse encouraged individuals to utilize those resources if needed. SEC continues to work on the recommendations made by the Eighth Senate Review Commission. Dallesasse also reported that a large packet of proposed changes to the Statutes is expected to be transmitted to the Senate for consideration in the spring. In the spring, the Senate will continue to meet via Zoom webinar as long as the Governor continues to issue disaster proclamations. Dallesasse reminded everyone to stay vigilant against COVID-19 and encouraged mask wearing, vaccinations, and frequent hand washing.
VI. CHANCELLOR’S REMARKS
Chancellor Robert Jones noted that the SHIELD Team continues to monitor COVID-19 data very closely and respond appropriately. The new Omicron variant seems to be more contagious. Jones encouraged everyone to get vaccinated and if already vaccinated, get the booster.
With all the increased mental health pressures at this time of year, Jones asked that individuals keep themselves and others safe. Jones reiterated to reach out for mental health resources if needed.
The State of the University Address was recorded and will soon be available. Formal remarks and questions and answers are included in the recording. Jones wished everyone a good winter break.
VII. QUESTIONS
Faculty senator Benson (LIBR) asked about the possibility of requiring booster vaccinations. Jones responded that a lot of unanswered questions remain at this juncture so right now everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, get the booster, wear a mask, and follow safety guidelines.

On behalf of the Senate Committee on Committees (CC), Committee Member Jenkins introduced and moved approval of proposal CC.22.15.
12/06/21-16 Andrew Moss (LAS) was nominated from the floor to fill the faculty vacancy on Public Engagement & Outreach (2022) and Kent Choquette (ENGR) was nominated from the floor to fill the faculty vacancy on University Student Life (2022). There were no additional nominations from the floor and nominations were declared closed.
12/06/21-17 Through the online voting system Poll Everywhere, proposal CC.22.15 was approved as amended with 126 in favor, 0 opposed, and 1 abstention.
12/06/21-18 RS.22.02* Resolution Regarding Data Collection and Instructor Notification in Cases of Students with Highly Infectious Diseases in Instructional Settings
Faculty senator Rosenstock (LAS) introduced and moved approval of resolution RS.22.02 and the motion was seconded. Kirkpatrick added additional comments and discussion followed. Several faculty senators and a student senator spoke in support of the resolution. After a few questions were answered, debate drew to a close.
12/06/21-19 Through the online voting system Poll Everywhere, resolution RS.22.02 was approved with 83 in favor, 27 opposed, and 11 abstentions.
