State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Sterling) spoke out against House Bill 5471 in a Facebook post published on Monday.

"As an Illinois State Senator, I take the responsibility to protect all citizens seriously and believe we should work together to find solutions that help keep people safe without infringing upon our constitutional rights," Rezin wrote. "However, I strongly believe that House Bill 5471 misses that mark. This proposal will create criminals out of law-abiding citizens instead of making the citizens of our state safer and does not take a wholesome approach to address gun violence."

Under HB 5471, the Protect Illinois Community Act, magazines with over 10 rounds would be banned for long guns, and those with over 15 rounds would be banned for handguns.

The National Rifle Association's (NRA) Institute for Legislative Action explained that Illinois citizens can only keep their banned magazines and parts if they register them with the state. It also urged state residents to ask their legislators to oppose HB 5471.

According to ABC7, Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed the bill on Tuesday, putting it into effect immediately. Assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices are now banned under the law. Both Rezin and fellow state Sen. Win Stoller (R-Peoria) voted against the bill, according to YCMY.
