Efforts to expand outdoor recreation in Illinois have received a significant boost with the announcement of $54.9 million in grant funding for 111 local park projects. The funding comes from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program, which has been supporting park and recreation improvements for 37 years.

OSLAD was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1986 to foster a partnership between state and local governments in enhancing parks and recreation areas. Over the years, the program has allocated nearly $585 million for recreational projects in the state. This ongoing investment reflects the importance of outdoor recreation for Illinois residents, with studies showing that 83 percent of them consider access to such spaces crucial.

State Senator Sue Rezin recognizes the value of the OSLAD program in promoting overall health and community well-being. She explains, "When people are able to get outside more often, it leads to better overall health." In addition to the health benefits, these park projects contribute to community morale by providing residents with gathering spaces to enjoy nature.

Senator Rezin is pleased to announce the grants awarded in the 38th District. The Village of Minooka will receive $600,000, while the City of LaSalle and the City of Peru will each receive $300,000. These funding allocations will enable these communities to purchase and develop land for their respective recreation projects.

The grants provided by OSLAD will not only enhance the physical and mental well-being of Illinois residents but also strengthen community bonds by creating spaces for people to come together. As the state continues to invest in parks and recreation, it demonstrates its commitment to fostering a healthy and vibrant environment for all its residents.
