State Senator Sue Rezin | Illinois General Assembly
Illinois Senate Deputy Republican Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris) has spoken out in support of maintaining the current name of Starved Rock State Park in light of discussions about a possible name change. She emphasized the significance of the park's name to the local community and the potential negative impact of altering it.
Rezin stated, “The Starved Rock name has become a treasured part of the local community’s identity and brand. There are far too many people who rely on the park’s nationally recognized name for their livelihoods.”
Senate Resolution 956, introduced by Rezin, advocates for the preservation of the historic name of the state park. The resolution acknowledges the concerns of residents and businesses and calls for open dialogue with various stakeholders, including Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities, to find a way to honor the park's heritage while respecting different viewpoints.
Sen. Rezin emphasized, “It is vital that we honor the important history of Starved Rock State Park...in a way that preserves the park’s iconic name while respecting the heritage of Indigenous people.”
The Resolution was submitted in the Illinois Senate on April 30 and is awaiting further action.
