Gardner-South Wilmington High School #73 Board of Education met Oct. 16.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

FY24 AUDIT PRESENTATION: 

Mrs. Lauri Pope, representing Mack & Associates, was at tonight’s meeting for the FY24 Audit presentation ending June 30, 2024. All of the recommendations were implemented from the previous year. The bank recs are balanced. No significant adjustments are needed. The district is making strides and moving in the right direction. The district is looking to put the financials in the software system.

PUBLIC COMMENT: NONE. There was no public at tonight’s meeting.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Mr. Brian Davis, Principal, reported the following:

● Sept 25 – Mr. Davis met with our Truancy Officer.

● GAVC Director’s Award – Ryan Millette for Criminal Justice

● On October 2, the Grundy County Police Department arrived at GSW HS with several K9 units. They searched the building and parking lot/vehicles, but no findings were made.

● Oct 5 – Autumn Ball Dance was held from 7 to 9 pm.

● Oct 8 & 9 – Parent / Teacher Conferences were held from 2:30 until 6:00 pm.

● Oct 10 – SIP Day: Students will be dismissed at 11:30 AM, and teachers will meet in their PLC groups in the afternoon.

● Oct 11 – 14 – Fall Break

● Oct 16 – PSAT testing with Juniors and end of the 1st quarter

● Oct 17 – The RVC Volleyball Tournament begins with GSW vs. Illinois Lutheran at home.

● Oct 18 – Report cards will be printed and mailed out.

● Oct 18 & 19 – Bella Dinelli has advanced to STATE for girls’ golf. We will have a clap-off for her.

● Oct 20-22 – IPA Conference in Peoria

● Oct 28 – Volleyball Regionals begin

● Nov 5 – NO SCHOOL – Election Day

● Nov 14 – Principal’s meeting

● Nov 16 – Orange & Black Night at GSW HS

DIRECTORS’ REPORTS: Mrs. Chris Ruddy electronically submitted the following:

● Oct 5 – GSW was an SAT Testing Site. We had several GSW students, as well as students from other area schools, take the SAT, which is now taken for college scholarship opportunities.

● Oct 9 – NHS Adopt-a-Highway clean-up.

● Oct 16 – The PSAT test was given to our Juniors

● Oct 18 – GAVC will be at GSW for our Sophomore Class presentations.

● RTI Team – helping students with math, reading, English, HOPS.

● Lions Club – Mrs. Ruddy attended a Lions Club meeting as the NHS Sponsor. She shared that NHS students can help at future breakfasts and will be helping in May at the Route 66 event.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS REPORT: Mrs. Sue Avery discussed the following:

● Ongoing communication with Wally Debelak – Head of Maintenance

● Piping issue – we had leaks in a few pipes. Tri-Co came out and fixed leaks in our tunnels and several other areas in the building.

● The New Weight Room has been completed. Students are using this room for our Lifetime Fitness PE class. We still need to fix the garage door and add a new heating/cooling system.

● Parking Lot – standing water area – called Chamlin & Associates – working on fixing the issue.

● Fencing around the baseball field: Mr. Deblak is considering purchasing material to put down around the fence. This will cut down on weeds and time spent trimming and mowing.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Mrs. Avery presented on the following:

● Triple I Conference Update = discussed plans for the annual board convention in Chicago

● Early levy workshops = Mrs. Avery and Amber Ryle, bookkeeper, have been attending/participating in workshops.

BOE MEMBERS REPORTS: None at this time.

ACTION ITEMS:

● Approve the FY25 Seniority List—Per PERA, this is done annually in the event we need to RIF

(Reduction in Force) a certified staff member.

● Affirm the hiring of Assistant Volleyball Coach – Ms. Lauren Vitko

● Approve the District Bullying Policy

● Approve the FY24 Audit Presentation

● Approve renewal of Financial Consultant contract

● Approve the early graduation of a student – Tess Brooks

● Affirm the hiring of Kitchen Helper – Marshell Harris

● Affirm Freshman Class Sponsor – Class of 2028 – Mrs. Jillian Wills

OTHERS:

Katy Wepprecht asked how to reconcile our bank statements using the software program. Mrs. Avery will contact the software company to assist with this process.

Tim Harvey asked about the condition of our tennis courts and whether we are still considering turning them into Pickleball courts.
