As winter approaches, Illinois residents should prepare for increased heating bills compared to last year. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its annual winter energy outlook, predicting rising natural gas and electricity costs, especially in northern states and the Midwest.
Last winter's record warmth contributed to relatively low energy costs. However, the EIA forecasts colder temperatures this year, which is expected to drive up heating expenses. According to MoneyGeek, households in Illinois may experience a $10 to $15 monthly increase in natural gas bills. This variation depends on factors such as home size and thermostat settings.
To manage these costs, residents can take measures like sealing drafts, using programmable thermostats, and lowering the thermostat at night. Additionally, eligible households can apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which assists low-income families with energy bills. Applications are currently open.
