As Thanksgiving approaches, Illinois residents are being reminded to prioritize safety during the holiday. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the American Red Cross have provided guidelines to help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.
Thanksgiving is noted as the leading day for home cooking fires in the United States, according to the NFPA. To prevent such incidents, individuals are advised to remain in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. It is also recommended to keep flammable items like towels and paper away from heat sources. In case of emergencies, having a metal lid or baking sheet nearby can be useful for smothering grease fires.
With an estimated 132 million people expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year, road safety is also a concern. Travelers should ensure their vehicles are in good condition and pack an emergency kit with essential items. Checking weather forecasts before departure is advised. To enhance safety on long trips, avoiding distractions, taking breaks, and rotating drivers when necessary are recommended practices. In cases where winter weather causes delays or if travelers become stuck, it is suggested they stay with their vehicle, keep the exhaust pipe clear, and use a brightly colored cloth to signal for help.
These preparations aim to contribute towards a safe and joyful holiday season.
