A recent study by the Tax Foundation has placed Illinois at 37th in its State Tax Competitiveness Index. This annual report assesses states based on five tax categories, identifying that those with lower rankings often have high, complex, and non-neutral tax systems. In contrast, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Alaska are noted for their simpler and pro-growth tax policies.

State Senator Sue Rezin attributes Illinois' high taxes to actions taken by Governor Pritzker and his allies. She remarked, "Governor Pritzker recently signed into law a billion-dollar tax increase to fund his programs," which she claims includes allocating "a billion dollars per year for services for noncitizens."
