James Vernon Chronister Sr., Fondly Remembered as "Loveable Otis of Mayberry," Passes Away at the Age of 79

Morris, IL - James Vernon Chronister Sr., known as "Loveable Otis of Mayberry," passed away on January 25, 2025, at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet. He was born on June 14, 1945, in Halls/Frog Jump, TN, to Rosie Lee and Vernon Odell Chronister.

Raised by his grandparents Thomas and Etta Garrett until age 12, James moved to Morris, IL, with his mother and stepfather Calvin Brewer. He graduated from Opdyke School and married his childhood sweetheart Kathleen Umphrey in 1967.

After a 51+ year career in local and over-the-road truck driving, including roles at Ecolab in Joliet and Walmart, James retired in 2020. He was a dedicated and active member of his community, coaching little league, serving as a Golden Gloves Boxer, and volunteering with various organizations.

Since 1996, James delighted audiences as the "Loveable Otis of Mayberry" at festivals, parades, comedy shows, and truck shows across the country, including events in Bentonville, AR, and Mayberry Reunions.

James was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, cherished spending time with family, music, dancing, and watching old Westerns. He also enjoyed helping others and was involved in various community activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and sisters.

Survived by his wife Kathy, children Kassie, Karl, Renae, James II, Tracy, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, James will be dearly missed.

A visitation will be held on January 29, 2025, at U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, with a celebration of life on January 30, 2025. Memorials in James's name may be made to the VFW Post 6049 Auxiliary.
