Ronald G. Newton, 90, remembered for his love of family, fishing, and travel

Ronald G. Newton, aged 90, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at The Arc of Dwight, IL. Born on September 6, 1934, in Makanda, IL, to Byford Newton and Verla Billingsley, Ron was affectionately known as Newt, Gene, Uncle Bucky, and Grampy Newt. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, playing euchre, reading books, and traveling to southern Illinois to visit relatives. Ron cherished his moments with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children Michele (Jim) Coleman, Melanie (John) Scheffer, and Mike Newton; grandchildren Hope Acker, Kelsey (Eric) Adkins; great-grandchildren Liam Acker and Kameron Adkins; sister Rita Belcher, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Emily, parents, sister Dena Johnson, brother Bill Newton, and brother-in-law Melvin Johnson.

An Army veteran and retired member of Midwest Operating Engineers Local 150, Ron was also passionate about fishing and was a fish researcher during his college days at SIU-Carbondale.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm at U.C. Davis Callahan Funeral Home in Morris, followed by a celebration of Ron's life at 12:15 pm. He will be laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL, following the service at 2:00 pm. Cremation rites have been accorded.
