As planting season begins, Illinois roads are increasingly occupied by farmers utilizing large equipment such as tractors and planters. Drivers in the state are advised to exercise caution and share the road.
Farmers in Illinois have started their annual planting routines, resulting in more farm machinery on highways. Such equipment typically moves slower and occupies more space than average vehicles. The American Farm Bureau Federation has provided guidelines to maintain road safety:
"Be alert and cautious. Give large farm equipment and other slow-moving vehicles space."
It is important not to overtake in “No Passing Zones” or anywhere dangerous, like intersections, bridges, and railroad crossings. Another safety tip is to confirm tractors are not making a left turn before passing.
“Don’t tailgate,” says the Federation, emphasizing the need for safe distances between vehicles.
There is also a reminder to be cautious when passing farm equipment, as farmers will often make room for other vehicles when it is safe to do so.
