At a time when Illinois families face challenges with inflation, high grocery bills, and rising utility costs, Democrats in Springfield are proposing a $6 billion tax increase to support Governor JB Pritzker’s state budget. The proposed budget would increase state spending by 37% since he took office, amounting to roughly $15 billion.
Facing a large projected budget deficit, Democrats are focusing on new taxes rather than reducing spending. The plan includes taxes on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and an increase in the estate tax. These measures could impact small businesses, family farms, and investment in the state's economy. The "targeted" taxes may lead to higher prices for consumers and fewer job opportunities.
Illinois currently has the highest overall tax burden in the country. Instead of providing relief for working families, Democrat leaders are seeking more revenue while including benefits for illegal immigrants. The estate tax hike could make it difficult for generational family businesses to survive, and taxes on business and investment might drive employers out of Illinois.
State Senator Sue Rezin commented that this is not a plan to fix Illinois’ economy but "a blueprint for more government dependency, fewer jobs, and continued outmigration."
