The Illinois Shelter Alliance has reported a significant increase in homelessness across the state, with figures rising by 116% over the past year. The crisis is attributed to the high cost of living affecting both urban and rural areas.

In recent years, state spending has seen substantial growth under the Governor's administration, reaching over $55 billion—a nearly 40% increase and the fastest expansion in Illinois history.

During this period of increased homelessness, Illinois Democrats have allocated close to a billion dollars for services aimed at non-citizens. In contrast, only $290 million was designated for housing and homelessness in last year's budget.

Chicago faces challenges from asylum-seekers, while working-class families throughout downstate Illinois struggle with escalating housing costs. The Illinois Shelter Alliance notes that housing-related homelessness has surged between 40 and 50 percent due to inflation, rent hikes, and general unaffordability.

State Senator Sue Rezin criticized what she perceives as misplaced priorities by the state. She urged Democratic lawmakers to address the root causes of homelessness and provide necessary relief for affected families and communities.
