As the new school year begins, Illinois families and educators have access to tax credits intended to reduce education-related expenses. The K-12 Education Expense Credit allows parents and guardians to claim up to $750 per household by covering 25 percent of eligible expenses over $250. These include tuition, book rentals, and lab fees paid directly to schools. Home-schooling families may also qualify for certain curriculum-related costs. In the previous year, nearly 200,000 families used this credit, with an average savings of $324.
Educators can apply for the Instructional Materials and Supplies Credit. This program offers up to $500 in credits for full-time K-12 teachers, aides, counselors, and principals who work at least 900 hours during the school year. Married couples who are both educators and file jointly may receive up to $1,000 in credits. In 2024, more than 81,000 Illinois educators claimed this credit, resulting in collective savings of over $35 million.
State Senator Sue Rezin commented on these programs: "These tax credits are a practical way to help ease the financial burden of a new school year and encourages families and teachers to keep their receipts and file for the relief they deserve."
For additional information about these tax credits or eligibility requirements, individuals can visit the Illinois Department of Revenue website at https://tax.illinois.gov/ or review IDOR Publication 112.
Rezin has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since her election in 2010 representing the state's 38th Senate District after succeeding Gary G. Dahl.
