The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) has announced a temporary program for state taxpayers who have outstanding tax liabilities. Under this initiative, penalties and interest on unpaid taxes from June 30, 2018, through July 1, 2024, can be forgiven.

To take advantage of the amnesty program, eligible taxpayers must pay and file their returns in full between October 1 and November 17. The department clarified that it does not collect property taxes, and estate, franchise, and insurance taxes are not included in this amnesty offer. Taxpayers retain the right to appeal decisions made by IDOR.

"IDOR’s last tax amnesty was in October and November of 2019. No future amnesty periods are currently planned in the Illinois Tax Delinquency Amnesty Act. Amendments to the act with additional dates require action from the Illinois General Assembly."

For detailed information about eligibility and application procedures, residents can visit the IDOR's official website at https://tax.illinois.gov/taxamnesty.

Sue Rezin has represented Illinois' 38th Senate District since her election to the state senate in 2010 after replacing Gary G. Dahl.
