Jim Edgar, who served as the 38th Governor of Illinois from 1991 to 1999, died on September 14, 2025, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 79 years old.
State Senator Sue Rezin reflected on Edgar’s passing, stating: "Illinois has lost one of its most respected leaders, and Governor Jim Edgar’s commitment to integrity and service set a standard that all of us in public office should strive to follow."
Edgar was recognized for his long career in public service and his influence in Illinois Republican politics. His tenure as governor included addressing the state budget deficit and implementing reforms in education, welfare, and child protection. He also led the state during the Great Flood of 1993.
Before becoming governor in 1990, Edgar began his political career as a legislative intern for the Illinois General Assembly. He later served as an Illinois State Representative and Secretary of State.
After leaving elected office, Edgar remained active through public advocacy initiatives such as The Jim Edgar Fellow Program. This fellowship trains future public policy leaders to work collaboratively across boundaries to address major challenges facing Illinois.
Visitation services for Edgar were held at the Illinois State Capitol on September 19, followed by memorial services on Saturday.
Sue Rezin has represented Illinois’ 38th Senate District since her election to the State Senate in 2010. She succeeded Gary G. Dahl in this role (https://www.ilga.gov/senate/Senator.asp?GA=102&MemberID=2828).
