One city provided a little bit of relief to its residents by issuing a gift card that can be used to pay their utility bill or spend it at a local chamber of commerce business establishment.

A $65,000 expenditure was approved at a virtual meeting which allows $25 gift certificates to be handed out to Coal City Village residents. These gift certificates can be given to residents to be used for the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce payment. It can be also be used at any Grundy County Chamber of Commerce business.

Residents will receive the gift cards via mail attached to their utility bills.

"We are hoping that this will help our local businesses," Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz told the Morris Herald News. "The residents can use it to help pay their utility bill, since the Village is a Chamber member, or they can use it at any Grundy County Chamber of Commerce member business. If they choose not to use it at a Chamber business, all of the banks in town are Chamber members and they can deposit it."

There is also a $3,000 to $10,000 increase in what the village can spend in response to the coronavirus pandemic. This was also approved at the board meeting.
