The Illinois Secretary of State's office is distributing over $1 million in technology grants to 88 public libraries statewide. The initiative, managed by the Illinois State Library, aims to enhance technology access and services in underserved communities.
Eligible libraries will receive either $27,500 or $12,500, depending on their population size. Libraries must operate in areas with a low tax base relative to their service population to qualify for these grants. This year's recipients follow 113 libraries that benefited from similar funding last year.
The grant money can be used for various technological improvements such as upgrading hardware and software, expanding online resources, purchasing digital devices, enhancing Wi-Fi and internet access, ensuring website accessibility, and adding adaptive technologies and patron self-checkout systems. The primary objective is to bridge the digital divide and improve library services where they are most needed.
All 88 libraries have been informed of their eligibility and are collaborating with the State Library to finalize applications. Projects may commence as early as June 28, 2025, with grant funds required to be utilized within two years.
Among the recipients in the 38th District are Clinton Township Public Library and Ladd Public Library District.
