Former LaSalle County State's Attorney Karen Donnelly has recently filled a vacancy within the Grundy County State's Attorney's office.

"Through the last month I had been seeking applications and talking to people about filling the position," Grundy County State Attorney Jason Helland said of the process to find a replacement. “I had talked to Karen Donnelly about filling the position in my office, and she ultimately accepted the position and is going to start next Monday.”

Donnelly had been elected as the LaSalle County State's Attorney in 2016, but was ousted from the position by Todd Martin in the recent 2020 elections. For Helland, the hire came at an opportune moment.

“With an office of six people including myself, I think she brings great value to the office because it’s gonna be criminal misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, possibly some juvenile abuse and neglect cases, and also traffic court,” Helland said.

Along with consulting on numerous legal cases, Helland said this year has also provided unique obstacles for the office.

“With individuals in the office being exposed to COVID like we’ve had this year a couple of times, there’s a lot of times where you have to cover for other attorneys,” he added.

Donnelly’s salary will be approximately $60,000 in Grundy County.

Helland also spoke highly to Donnelly’s dedication to improving the LaSalle community during her tenure as state's attorney.

“Karen is really committed to the cause, to protect in the community and engaging in programs that reduce criminal recidivism in the community, such as our Drug Courts and Mental Health Courts,” he said.
