State Senator Sue Rezin | Illinois General Assembly
A recent report from the Auditor General has identified significant mismanagement in Governor Pritzker’s healthcare program for illegal immigrants, revealing a large number of potentially ineligible enrollees and costs that greatly exceed initial estimates. Illinois Senate Deputy Republican Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris) is emphasizing the audit's findings, urging for greater accountability and oversight to prevent further waste and protect taxpayer funds.
“This audit confirms widespread mismanagement and a disturbing lack of oversight in the state’s taxpayer-funded healthcare program for undocumented citizens,” stated Senator Rezin. “With thousands of potentially ineligible enrollees and costs far exceeding projections, it’s clear that Illinoisans deserve better. We must bring full transparency to all state spending on non-citizen programs to ensure accountability and protect taxpayer dollars.”
The auditors discovered that over 6,000 enrollees classified as “undocumented” actually possessed Social Security Numbers. This raises significant concerns about the integrity of the enrollment process and the state's failure to adequately verify eligibility. The lack of oversight not only undermines public trust but also burdens taxpayers with covering the state’s management failures regarding Pritzker’s program. Senator Rezin insists that Illinoisans need transparency and accountability instead of bureaucratic incompetence.
Additionally, the audit revealed substantial cost overruns, with spending on certain age groups reaching nearly 300% over budget. The most extreme case was within the 42-54 age group, where costs soared to almost triple what was initially projected. These errors underscore a severe lapse in fiscal planning, requiring taxpayers to cover these deficits.
Republicans have consistently criticized Governor Pritzker's decision to allocate substantial funds toward illegal aliens while Illinois families face increasing property taxes, grocery bills, and healthcare expenses. Instead of focusing on hardworking citizens, Democrats have directed taxpayer money into a program marked by wastefulness, mismanagement, and a lack of transparency.
The audit's findings have reignited demands for accountability. Senate Bill 1699, introduced by Senator Rezin, mandates detailed annual reports on various taxpayer-funded programs for migrants and illegal aliens—not just healthcare but also housing, legal aid, among other services. These reports would detail total expenditures, specific appropriations, recipient numbers, funding sources, and awarded contracts. To promote transparency and prevent further misuse of taxpayer money, this information would be made publicly accessible online.
Illinois taxpayers are entitled to transparency and fiscal responsibility. This audit demonstrates that mismanagement within Pritzker’s program has led to considerable cost overruns and squandered taxpayer resources. With accountability long overdue, Senator Rezin will persist in advocating for reforms prioritizing hardworking families first while demanding transparency and ending reckless spending.
